This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for November 11, 2008:
i got an earful from someone... to the extend he seemed to think i have no common sense at all...
now its amazing coz i am paying him to work for me. how can I subject myself to such thing is beyond me... and he is not the only one am paying to give me headache...
sometimes i feel people take kindness for granted. Sometimes i think people misunderstood that allowing them to voice their opinion is a license for them to lash out and forget to give others a chance to air their opinion. sometimes people think patience is a sign of weakness....
perhaps thats why people management is a SKILL.....

Help

My experience has been that people need to be taught, sometimes, how I would like them to speak to me. This was often true of MY children when THEY were small, though THEY weren't ever very rude.
I gently ask Others to please not speak to me rudely; something like this: “Would you mind speaking to me more gently? I don't speak rudely to YOU and I would ask that you not speak rudely to me, please.”
When THEY respond, “Yes, I would effing mind!”
Ask, “Do you think you could possibly speak to me more kindly; I mean, do you have the ability to speak more kindly to me?”
Almost everyone answers this last question, “Of course, I have the ability to speak to you anyway I want to.”
Then I reply, “What can I do to help you to speak to me more kindly?”
Almost everyone, even people who don't like me respond gently to being offered help, even when THEY don't know “Why?!?”
Hi TextMage,
that sounds like a great tip… will give it a try next time around …
Thanks a LOT!
